Competitions
For the benefit of our new families, Kallara Calisthenics is a competitive College. All of our age groups from Tinies through to Masters participate in 3-4 competitions between August and October and then the Annual Display in November. Dates are released by the competition conveners in May. We include every student within our routines and our coaches prepare and choreograph to show their work on stage. All our effort and energy throughout the year is to be able to be our very best and represent our College proudly at local and not-so local competitions.
You will have costumes you will need to bring to your competitions. Some parents will be given a set of head pieces which they will hold onto for the whole season and return after the Annual Display. A large garment bag is suitable to store costumes but please remove them from the bag and hang up when not at competition. A roster will be distributed for parents to help in the dressing/change rooms. Please also note, a current WWCC is required to be displayed if you wish to enter the dressing room after the commencement of the competition. We are not allowed to have siblings and prams in the dressing rooms due to OH&S.
Please make sure that snacks at competitions are of the not messy variety, are healthy options and try to limit lollies to the end of the comp. We strongly encourage water bottles at all competitions and rehearsals. Students are not permitted to eat or drink while wearing uncovered costumes and will be reprimanded if caught doing so. Please understand that our volunteers and members spend a lot of time making and decorating our beautiful costumes and therefore, we do expect each Kallara student to treat their costumes with the uttermost respect.
Selecting Teams
Team selection is a time of great anticipation for our members and their families. To ensure a common understanding of the rationale and processes used by Kallara Calisthenics, our Team Selection Policy is articulated in our College Handbook. The team selection process occurs early in the year with the section Coaches assuming sole responsibility for establishing the criteria used for team selection and team placement. We invite all members and their families to celebrate and support every individual’s placement.
Competition Etiquette
Calisthenics Victoria has developed commandments for competition etiquette. We encourage every girl across every section to read this guideline as there are some useful hints for making sure the Kallara colours are worn with pride and respect. We expect our students and supporters to set and display a high level of appropriate behaviour and this is something we strongly encourage here at Kallara Calisthenics. Please remind your son or daughter that at competitions, they are representing Kallara when they wear the uniform.
For our competitors:
- Kallara jacket, black pants and shoes are to be worn within the theatre at all times when not changing or performing on stage.
- The Kallara warm-up hoodie is not a recognised part of the competition uniform and are NOT to be worn solely by pupils when competing at a competition. If you are interesting in purchasing a Kallara hoodie, we recommend wearing it underneath your official College jacket to stay warm at competitions. (This does not apply to our supporters and spectators in the audience and we encourage our supporters to bear our colours and show your support!).
- Refrain from leaning against walls and furniture with legtan on.
- Black jazz pants, leggings or shorts are required to be worn when warming up.
- Please do not sit in the first four rows in the auditorium out of respect for fellow performers.
- Do not verbally harass, bully or abuse competitors from other clubs, volunteers of the competition or adjudicators.
- Please refrain from walking around backstage in only a bodystocking or undergarments.
- There are to be no headdresses worn in the auditoriums.
For our Parents/coaches/audience members:
Our Members and Kallara Calisthenics supporters are the public face of the College at competitions and events. As such, the College requires all members to behave in a dignified and respectful manner, including adhering to theatre rules and regulations. Remember that:
- During performances

- please remain seated
- there is no food or drinks in the auditorium
- do not use torches or electronic devices
- taking photographs and/or videos is strictly prohibited
- After performances

Ballarat Competitions
The Royal South Street Competition is a great time for the coaches, the girls and their families. It is the last competition of the season and it is a time to work hard and celebrate the year we have had. Some families bring Dads, Aunties and Grandparents to watch the teams perform at the Founder’s Theatre.
For our Sub Juniors, Juniors and Intermediates, the teams will head up to Ballarat usually the day before their competition. Traditionally the team will stay together at the same motel and enjoy a team dinner the night before the competition, but we do not stipulate where our families book their accommodation. Family support is welcomed and encouraged and arrangements can be made to accommodate for all family members. Details about Ballarat meals and accommodation are handed out several months before the competition by Team Managers as this gives our families the opportunity to work out their food and accommodation requirements.
The competition usually takes up the whole day, but it is always a lot of fun. Our teams, their coaches and our volunteers work hard to perform in Ballarat and watching the culmination of months of practice materialize into an onstage performance is breathtaking. What’s more, the friendship and team spirit that comes from the sport of calisthenics is very uplifting.
